A beautiful early 20th Century portrait with heavy (yet successful) contemporary over painting. The portrait is of a beautiful young woman with Victorian dress, with floral lace bonnet and ringletted hair. Some areas of the original under drawing are still visible in graphite, the appearance of which indicate that the woman may have been intended to carry a parasol, yet the painting was never finished. The over painting appears to cover much of the aging and damage to the original. The artist has signed (this has also been over painted) illegibly (possibly Coortes) and dated to the lower edge. On re-lined canvas.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The canvas has been fully re-lined and there is contemporary over painting across the surface of the painting, covering areas of paint loss and other minor damage.
