Description

A delicate watercolour study depicting a continental townhouse overlooking a busy waterway. Barges and ships can be seen on the water and two female figures stand facing away from the viewer. Inscribed to the reverse 'Clarkson Stanfield'. This study is reminiscent of some of the artist's watercolour sketches. On wove laid to card.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing.

Artist Biography

Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793-1867) was a prominent English painter (often inaccurately credited as William Clarkson Stanfield) who was best known for his large-scale paintings of dramatic marine subjects and landscapes. He was the father of the painter George Clarkson Stanfield and the composer Francis Stanfield.
