David Gainford was born in South Africa in 1941 but spent his entire life in the UK. At the age of nine he won the national competition for drawing and a scholarship to Art school when fourteen. At art school John Pisani, an Academician of some repute, tutored him. In the late 1980s David studied and worked in the studio of Robert Lenkiewicz in Plymouth where he gained invaluable experience.
