Artist Biography

Ethel Gray was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1879. She studied art at York, Leeds and the Royal College of Art, London. She later became art mistress at York and Leeds Schools of Art and at the Leeds training college. She is known to have been living in Oxford in 1900 and Leeds in 1939. Between these dates, in 1926, she taught at the Forbes School in Newlyn, Cornwall and exhibited at the local gallery. The small fishing village of Newlyn had long been a haven for artists, producing the Newlyn School of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries. The Forbes School of Art was an establishment set up by, and named after, one of the leading figures of the group, Stanhope Forbes, and his wife, Elizabeth.
