Description

A delicate watercolour study of a mountain and lake view, most likely the English Lake District by Charles Edmund Rowbotham (1856-1921). Figures can be seen resting on the grass bank in the sun. A goat can be seen behind them, looking out across the water to a fishing boat. Signed to lower right and dated 1890. Presented in a gilt frame with corner mouldings, and white card mount. Glazed. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are a few small chips to the gilt frame.

Artist Biography

Charles Edmund Rowbotham (1856-1921) was born in London and was one of eight children of Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham (1823-1875), and grandson of Thomas Leeson Scarse Rowbotham (1783-1853) both painters. Rowbotham exhibited from 1877 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Dudley Gallery and the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham.
