Framed Late 19th Century Watercolour - A Fresh Catch
Description
A very finely detailed late 19th Century watercolour with sgraffito, depicting a countryside landscape and a house, in the traditional English style of the period. Three figures make their way towards the house, with a fresh catch from the river. The artist has a clear proficiency in the medium, with great command of form and shadow. Sgraffito adds texture to the water, and fine brushwork creates a real sense of depth.
Well-presented in a gilt wooden frame with moulded ribbon running pattern, and inner beading with a plain cove. There is an inscription to the reverse, reading 'This picture was accepted by my Grandfather J. Archer Smith, who was a timber merchant in London, in payment of a bad debt'.
