Artist Biography
Kent Cottrell was born in the United States, in 1887. She obtained art training in Cornwall, England. In the early part of the 20th Century, she lived and worked (as an artist) in South Africa. She was particularly well-known for her oil paintings of South African Zulu people, as they were engaged in everyday village activities, participated in in cultural ceremonies, and/or wore traditional Zulu attire. By the middle of the 20th Century, Cottrell had also published books about South Africa, for which some of her works of art were used as the illustrations. Her books include “Sunburnt Africa”, “More than Sunburnt”, and “Sunburnt Sketches”. Today, her artwork is highly collectible.
