Sulis Fine Art is delighted to present this superb late 19th century oil portrait. The artist has expertly captured the sitter with great detail, paying noticeable attention to the hands and facial features. The hint of a smile is visible at the corner of her mouth and her kind eyes look into the distance.
Although we have no information on our mysterious sitter, there are clues within the painting that may help to reveal her identity and position in life.
The sitter wears a simple black dress, suggesting that she is a widow. The Victorians had strict social rules for widows and grieving family members, this was greatly influenced by one of the most famous widows, Queen Victoria. A delicate lace cap is positioned neatly in place, matching the lace details of the dress with a fine gold pin nestled beneath her chin. She is clearly a lady of status, both socially and within her family.
The portrait is presented in a very fine and substantial ornate gilt frame with molding detail and gilt slip. It is very likely this is the original frame. The portrait is unsigned.
The artwork is in very good condition for it's age. There does appear to have been some restoration, the canvas has been relined and there are flecks of overpainting to the corners of the canvas. There are various small repairs to the canvas in the dark background area, the most noticeable repair is to the far left side, with a faint vertical line that measures 5cm. This blends in well with the dark background. The frame is also in very good condition, although there is some slight widening to the joints and various scuffs to the edges and corners.
