Czechoslovakian born self-taught painter of portraits of women. the arrived in England in 1938 and when war broke out the became a commissioned war artist with the Czech army. After the war the worked in the office of architect Erno Goldfinger and during the period 1946-50 the taught at the Sir John Cass School of Art and in 1947 became the youngest elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Egon was briefly involved with British Surrealist movement and showed at the Zwemmer Gallery in the company of John Tunnard, Conroy Maddox, Ithel Colqhoun and Eileen Agar.
Since 1949, when the went to Greece where the was commissioned to paint a war memorial and subsequently to make portraits of the Greek royal family, the has mainly worked as a portrait painter and has depicted many heads of state, not least in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Morocco. Other sitters include W. Somerset Maugham, L.S. Lowry, Arturo Toscanini and Helen Mirren. Since 1978 has concentrated on painting the Greek landscape. His 1972 pastel portrait of Prince William of Gloucester is in the collection of the NPG.
