A fine example of a delicate landscape work in watercolour, by the listed British artist Percy Lancaster (1878-1951) RI RBA RIBA. This composition is typical of the artists style, depicting a rural landscape with figures haymaking beneath cloudy skies.
The artist employs a range of tones and shading to produce a remarkable sense of depth in the medium. Lancaster expertly draws the eye to specific areas of finer details, producing a well balanced composition.
Signed in the lower right hand corner with a framing information label on reverse. Well-presented in a hessian cotton slip in a distressed wooden frame with gilt effect detailing, as shown.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor discolouration and foxing with some surface dirt beneath the glazing and on the slip. The frame contains some scuffed edges resulting in some surface losses.

Artist Biography
Percy Lancaster (1878-1951) was born in Manchester in 1878. He studied architecture before taking up painting, studying at the Southport and Manchester Schools of Art. A fine landscape painter in both oils and watercolours, he was also a fine etcher, being elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1910. Four years later he was made a full member of the Royal Society of British Artists and in 1921, member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours.
He exhibited in many of the major institutions and galleries in the UK, including 20 works at the Royal Academy, 60 at the Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers, 12 at the Fine Arts Society, 123 at Liverpool's Walker Gallery, 68 at the Royal Cambrian Academy, 104 at the Royal Society of British Artists and others up and down the country.
Other works by Lancaster have previously sold at both Sotheby's and Christie's in London.
