Artist Biography
Peter Lionel Thursby was born in Salisbury on December 23 1930, the only child of an Army officer, and educated at Bishop Wordsworth’s College, Salisbury, where his English teacher (and his sailing tutor) was William Golding. A career in art always beckoned, and he studied at St Paul’s College, Cheltenham (where he met his wife, “Mo” Aspden), going on to the West of England and Exeter Colleges of Art. Thursby balanced his developing career as a painter and printmaker with teaching, taking up the post of head of art and design at Hele’s Grammar School with the sparest of briefs: to “make the subject live”. He did so with compassion and a strong belief in technical ability. Finding himself drawn to sculpture, Thursby developed a symbolic and abstract style, giving figure groups a totemic, rather than a realistic, appearance. His work in the 1960s gained wider attention after the influential gallery owner Marjorie Parr invited him to exhibit at her Chelsea and St Ives galleries. His reputation was further enhanced by the invitation to exhibit, in 1963, at the Arnolfini gallery in Bristol and by a larger exhibition at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery the following year. His work began to fuse organic and mechanical forms as well as jazzy notes of colour . By the late 1960s he had refined his forms, creating a more symbolic assemblage of fine elegant shapes in materials such as aluminium and bronzed steel.
