A beautifully idyllic late 19th Century landscape by the accomplished plein-air artist, Robert Gallon. The landscape shows a swollen river, meandering past verdant meadows at its banks, where cattle graze at the edge of a woodland. A silhouette of a cathedral can be seen in the hazy distance. Gallon has used a muted palette that highlights his extraordinarily restrained and delicate use of blushing pink in the sky, reflected in the still water and the acid green of the lush green pastures on the banks. The scene has a soothing serenity, typical of Gallon's work.
The artist has signed to the lower left and the painting has been handsomely presented in an early 20th Century gilt fame
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some craquelure to the surface. There are two small canvas repairs at the reverse that has ve been fully restored at the front. There is a light bloom on the darker areas of paint. Very small dent to the upper right quadrant. The fame has some tarnishing and a small loss to the molding at the lower left inner edge.

Robert Gallon was an English genre painter, best known for his landscape paintings of the British Isles. Painted in muted ochres and subtle tonal variations, his work frequently features placid bodies of water reflecting the grey English skies. Born in England in 1845, Gallon's canvases was regularly exhibited at institutions like the Royal Academy and the British Institution from 1873 to 1903. Stylistically akin to other British academic painters like George Vicat Cole, Gallon's work is notable for his fondness for plein-air painting. The artist died in 1935.
