A heartwarming mid 19th Century oil showing a jolly scene where two couples are meeting in the middle of a country path. The inscription on the reverse ("It's ages since we met") indicates them to be old friends having a fortuitous meeting. Their dog sits on the grass beside them, having a good scratch. The artist has signed indistinctly to the reverse and inscribed faintly on the lower stretcher. The painting has been handsomely presented in a fine example of a mid 19th Century gilt gesso frame with rope work molding and a gilt slip. On canvas.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame has scuffing, aging and minor losses to the outer edges.
