Description

A colourful arrangement of cut flowers with touches of body colour to highlight the petals. Presented in a black mount with a circular window. Inscribed with the artists name to the reverse. A label with the Metal Box Company, Carlisle Studio also fixed to the reverse. On paper on board.

Condition

Overall the picture is in good condition. There is a light surface mark to the upper edge of the watercolour. Scuffing to the edge and corners of the mount. A 12cm closed tear running from the window to the edge of the mount. The mount is slightly lifting from the board.

Artist Biography

Painter born in Wood Green, London, who studied at Manchester School of Art. He subsequently worked as an illustrator, commercial artist and painter. He contributed illustrations to numerous magazines including 'Home Journal', 'Passing Show', 'Strand Magazine', 'Tatler', 'John Bull', Look and Learn, 'The Sketch', 'Woman & Home', 'Wide World', 'My Home' and 'Pearson's Magazine'. He also illustrated several books, mainly for children, these were often on religious subjects, which may reflect the fact that he was the son of a clergyman. Advertisers for whom he drew illustrations included Kodak, 'Barney's' Tobacco, The Times Furnishing Company, and John Player for whom he drew illustrations on sporting themes for their cigarette cards. In 1936-37 he wrote a series of articles for 'The Artist' entitled ‘My Approach and Methods in Story Illustration’.
